China’s new Ambassador to Iceland, Zhang Weidong, presented his letter of credence to President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson on Tuesday, Iceland Review reports. His predecessor, Ma Jisheng, left the country suddenly at the beginning of the year. According to several Chinese media outlets, Ma was arrested on suspicion of espionage.
At Zhang’s meeting with the Icelandic president, they discussed the countries’ increasing cooperation, a free-trade agreement that took effect earlier this year, the use of geothermal energy and research of ice melt and glaciers in the Arctic regions, as stated on the presidential office’s website.
