Fresh figures reveal that the number of applications from prospective aquaculture students in Norway has nearly trebled in only four years.

Fresh figures from Samordna opptak, the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service (NUCAS) reveal a strong increase in the number of students who apply for admission to aquaculture studies, according to Norwegian business daily Dagens Næringsliv

Faculty Director Nina Ellingsen Høiskar of the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture at Nord University believes the increase is due to the potential of the sea farming industries becoming better known among young people.

While candidates in earlier year mainly came from the sea farming industry or from areas with sea farming locations, the study programs today also draw students without such backgrounds and also young people from the cities, Høiskar says.

She attributes the rising trend also to the fact that the students are very attractive on the job market both during and after their studies.
