Salo comes from a position as special advisor at the Troms County Authority in Northern Norway. She has previously worked as the communications director for the Norwegian Polar Institute and as the communications manager and indigenous peoples advisor for the Norwegian Barents Secretariat.

She holds a bachelor's degree in journalism and has written a master's thesis on the impact of the Ukraine war on the Kirkenes community.

"For me, this is a dream job, which combines everything I am passionate about: international cooperation, communication, and the indigenous dimension! The Arctic Council has a clear mandate focused on preserving peace, stability, and cooperation in the Arctic, and it is a positive sign that all eight countries continue to prioritize this," Salo writes in a message to HNN.

She adds that she is looking forward to becoming part of the competent team in the Arctic Council Secretariat and bringing the important work being done in the Arctic Council to the forefront.

The Kingdom of Denmark, comprising Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Denmark, will assume the chairmanship of the Arctic Council on May 12th at a virtual meeting. For the past two years, Norway has held the leadership position, having taken over from Russia at war.

Salo will start in her position as Head of Communications in August and says she looks forward to highlighting the working groups in the council.

“I really look forward to highlighting the important work and cooperation that is being done in the working groups. They are the driving force in the Arctic Council and are working on current issues that the Arctic countries cannot solve individually.”

Salo takes over the position from German-Swedish Kristina Bär. Bär will now serve as the communications advisor for climate and environment at Nordic Energy Research.
