Newsletter: Hope in the Darkness

Bål i mørketiden

There is light in the dark, you just have to know where to look. (Photo: Bodø, northern Norway during the Polar Night, Trine Jonassen)

Dear reader. In the middle of a pitch-black, political world, Commentator Arne O. Holm brings us hope from the border with Russia. We write about fisheries agreements, closer security cooperation, climate, industry, and culture, and we are naturally continuing our coverage of Russian gas. Here are the latest news from the North.

As Bodø is about to end its year as the European Capital of Culture, the first in the Arctic, Kiruna in Northern Sweden eagerly awaits the decision on whether it will become the third Arctic city to be awarded the title.

Gas and security

We continue to follow Russian gas closely. Our latest investigations show that a cargo delivery from Antwerp in Belgium to Novatek’s Yamal LNG plant in the Russian Arctic raises’ questions about the effectiveness of EU sanctions.

Climate change could also impact the northern security, and researchers at the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment have researched how it can function as a threat multiplier for security in the Arctic

The Nordic Ministers of Defense will strengthen operational cooperation, enhance military mobility, and initiate drone collaboration, and Troms County in northern Norway will house an allied amphibious war center.

Hope and cooperation

Yet, despite a pitch-black political and security policy world, Editor and Commentator Arne O. Holm brings us a glimmer of hope from the Norwegian-Russian border:

“This winter, I have once again traveled through border areas in international media's absolute margins. I am currently on the literal border with Russia”.

Because, yes, cooperation with Russia is still taking place.

The Faroe Islands and Russia have now set next year's fishing quotas for Faroese waters and the Russian part of the Barents Sea.

And finally, read about the Canadian acquisition of the Northern Norwegian mining companies Nye Sulitjelma Gruver and Nussir.

On Tuesday, you can follow Holm and others directly from the annual Nansen High North Seminar, held under the auspices of the Fridtjof Nansen Institute here. Journalist Hilde-Gunn Bye will also be present.

Feel free to send us tips and read more at High North News.

Wishing you a peaceful Advent season,

Editor-in-Chief Trine Jonassen
