Newsletter Happy Holidays From High North News
Dear High North News reader! The last newsletter of the year comes with a clear security focus and thus summarizes the year we are now leaving behind. And probably also what lies ahead.
As we enter the last days of 2024, Norway and the Faroe Islands have agreed on next year's fishing quotas in the Norwegian economic zone, including the Barents Sea, as well as in the Faroese fishing zone. (Norwegian only)
Unfortunately, the end of the year also marks some broken green dreams, as commentator Arne O. Holm so aptly writes, the bankrupt estates of a couple of the largest and most unsuccessful green industrial ventures in the north are barely enough for a leftover dinner.
Nordic industry is attracting international attention, and a London-based mining company is to buy a graphite producer in northern Norway, through its Norwegian-based subsidiary.
Security and more security
Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine sees no end after over 1,000 days of war. The war brings with it a strong security focus in the Arctic, which in turn leads to closer ties.
And the defense ministers in Norway and Germany recently signed an agreement of intent on strengthened partnership in space, while the Norwegian Armed Forces have adopted the broadband provided by Norway's new Arctic satellites. (Norwegian only)
Also Norway and Great Britain will invest further in defense and security cooperation in the Arctic. (Norwegian only)
Culture and Russia
Cultural life in the north is happy; Norwegian parliamentary representatives want to shield funds for cultural cooperation in the High North from cuts in next year's foreign affairs budget. (Norwegian only)
Finally, you can read about a very interesting development in Russian gas, revealed by our investigative journalist Malte Humpert, who caught that Russian gas producer Novatek met with lobbyists in Washington warm US relations going into a new Trump administration.
On behalf of the editorial staff, I would like to wish you a peaceful Jul and a Happy New Year as we are closed from December 23 until January 2. We already know that the new year brings a lot of exciting things, so stay tuned and we will be back in January.
Feel free to follow us on social media until then.
All the best, editor-in-chief Trine Jonassen
