"We have a strong partnership with Denmark, and that is what we are going to build on until the day we can be sovereign,” says Greenland's incoming prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

“We are in the Kingdom of Denmark right now. And as long as we are in this construction, we need to build our relationship, and build our partnership to get it stronger until the day we can be a sovereign nation by ourselves."

That is stated by Greenland's incoming prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen (Demokraatit) in an interview with Reuters.

The new coalition on Greenland was announced last Friday and consists of Demokraatit, Siumut, Inuit Ataqatigiit, and Atassut. The coalition is not yet formally approved by the Parliament of Greenland Inatsisartut, which will meet on April 7, writes Sermitsiaq.

"Strong partnership"

"We have a strong partnership with Denmark, and that is what we are going to build on until the day we can be sovereign,” Nielsen continued.

The comments are made as US President Donald Trump continues to reiterate that the US should control Greenland.

“We’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100 percent,” Trump said in a recent interview with NBC News.

In a speech at the US military base, Pituffik Space Base, on Greenland last Friday, Vice President J.D. Vance furthermore accused Denmark of underinvesting in Greenland and its security architecture.

"We want respect"

"Greenland will never be part of America. Of course, we want respect, we want a strong partnership, we want to trade, we want a strong partnership on national security, of course. But we want it in mutual respect. We will never be for sale, and we will never be Americans," Greenland's prime minister Nielsen added to Reuters.

This week, Denmarks prime minister Mette Frederiksen (S) will visit Greenland for talks with the incoming Greenlandic leader and government, Naalakkersuisut.

"I look forward to continuing the close and reliable cooperation between Greenland and Denmark together with Jens-Frederik Nielsen and the rest of the Government of Greenland. Greenland has just been through a good democratic process and formed a broad government. It is important for me to visit and greet the future Chairman of the Government of Greenland as soon as possible," says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in a press release and continues:

"It has my deepest respect how the Greenlandic people and the Greenlandic politicians handle the great pressure that is on Greenland. It is a situation that calls for unity across political parties. Across the countries in the Danish Realm. And on cooperation in a respectful and equal way."
