Wanted to only speak Greenlandic in the Danish Folketing
The Greenlandic politician Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam caused a stir when she chose to give a speech in the Danish Folketing in Greenlandic only on Friday. She then refused – in Greenlandic – to read the speech in Danish. That is reported by the online newspaper Alltinget Arktis.
Danish politicians who participated in the Folketing reacted to what they called a "stunt".
Høegh-Dam said to the Danish newspaper Politiken that the choice to speak in Greenlandic was about "pointing out that we have different languages" in the Danish commonwealth. A topic that was recently up for debate in the prime minister's annual report. Therefore, everything must be able to take place in Greenlandic in the Danish parliament, believes the Greenlandic politician.
"The entirety of Greenland is still in Danish. In our parliament, you can speak Danish. Everything is done in Danish. You cannot have an education if you do not know Danish. So you experience ten minutes of our lives and get frustrated? It is provoking, says Aki.Matilda Høegh-Dam to the newspaper.
