High Noon: VIDEO: Formative Conditions in the North – Outsiderness and Youth Culture Violence
Across the Nordic region, more and more young people are moving south. In Sweden, violence and crime are accelerating, which is spreading to Norway. How do we face these challenges? Meet playwright and educator Rebekka Brox Liabø and more for a debate led by Editor Arne O. Holm during the Arctic Arts Festival in Northern Norway.
This week, the debate series High Noon took place in Harstad during the Arctic Arts Festival.
The debate on Monday dealt with formative conditions in the North, with a focus on outsiderness and violence in youth culture.
Across the Nordic region, more and more young people are choosing to leave their roots in the North and move southward. In Sweden, violence and crime are increasing. This is spreading, not least to Norway, and is creating significant challenges for society. At the same time, local communities that do not fulfill the young people's dreams are depleted.
How should we face these issues?
Writing teacher, playwright, and author Rebekka Brox Liabø contributes as a primary guest in conversation with Arne O. Holm, Editor of High North News.
The conversation is followed by a panel debate with the following participants:
- Luna Drecker, leader of the Tromsø Youth Council
- Martin Gamst Johansen, the previous leader of the Barents Regional Youth Council
- Yngve Myrvoll, intelligence, preparedness, and investigation leader in Troms police district
- Dag Rune Olsen, Rector at UiT – the Arctic University of Norway.
The debate took place in Norwegian. It also included a musical element by Thea Glanton Raknes, artist and songwriter.
