Norway took over the chairship of the Arctic Council earlier in May. Now, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is establishing a project position for the chairship period in Tromsø, Northern Norway.

Norwegian version.

On the 11th of May, Norway took over the chairship of the Arctic Council from Russia.

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will now advertise a project position in the city of Tromsø for the chairship period in the next two years, reports Nordlys.

Tromsø – known as Norway's Arctic capital – has since 2013 been the base for the Arctic Council's international secretariat, to which the position will be connected. The secretariat is located at FRAM – High North Research Centre for Climate and the Environment.

"Norway's chairship of the Arctic Council is the most important aspect of the government's Arctic initiatives over the next two years. The chairship will generate both new projects and ventures in the north and involve a number of the expertise communities in Tromsø and Northern Norway. Is it then important for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to have a person present in Tromsø to work on this," says Norwegian MFA Anniken Huitfeldt (Labor) to the newspaper.

The position will be part of the ministry's department for the High North, polar affairs, and resources. It will be advertised externally and is scheduled to be occupied in the fall.
