A warming climate and thawing ice require the construction of a new entrance area for the global seed vault at Svalbard.

There have been problems with melt water intrusion in the entrance area of Svalbard Global Seed Vault ever since the opening of the vault. This will now result in the building of a new entrance area and a separate service building.

Svalbardposten writes about the new plans

According to the paper, a brand new and waterproof concrete construction will be built, as will a new service building in relation to the facilities.

Communications Director Hege Njaa Aschim of Statsbygg, the seed vault’s owner, cannot say how much the new installations will cost.

- It will cost, of course, however, we do not really have a choice. We must have a secure and lasting solution. It is important for Norway and will hurt our reputation if we do not find one. We cannot control nature, so we must try to amend the challenges, Njaa Aschim says.
