Security Measures Implemented At Reynisfjara – Iceland's Beautiful, But Dangerous Beach
Safety signs and surveillance cameras are among the new measures at Reynisfjara beach to better ensure the safety of travelers, writes the magazine Iceland Review.
The black lava beach on Iceland's southern coast is a popular destination, but it also offers a powerful undercurrent and sneaky waves which quickly can grab visitors. In the period 2013-2021, five people died at the beach, according to the magazine.
To prevent new accidents, a working group has recommended security measures that have now been implemented.
From the parking lot, a 300-meter-long chain leads visitors along a path where they pass safety signs and the surveillance cameras stream directly from the beach to the police in Selfoss.
The beach is also split into zones which will guide visitors to where they can and cannot go. All visitors are also encouraged to stay on the beach ridge for a safe experience of the area.
