Population of Iceland Far Lower Than Previously Tallied

The Icelandic government has announced that there are 14,000 fewer Icelanders than first thought, according to the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq.

The error is due to Statistics Finland basing its figures on the national register of citizens. Immigrants have been encouraged to register to obtain an Icelandic identity number, legal address, and bank account. However, many have not de-registered when they have moved from the island.

Thus, it may take a little longer before Iceland reaches its target of 400,000 inhabitants.
