One-Third of Icelanders in Poverty

The news comes from Gallup's latest "National Pulse" (Þjóðarpúls) research, which surveyed the state of household finances, reports RUV.

People living in rural areas are more likely to say someone in their family lives in poverty than in the capital area.

The overall rate of poverty as estimated by the research, is just under one-third, at 32%.

Eight percent of respondents said they were accumulating debt - more common among renters than homeowners or those who live in their parents' houses. Single people between the ages of 35 and 66 report being in debt.

To an extent, poverty seems to track with the level of someone's education - those less well educated are more likely to be poorer.
