The Norwegian Government Improves Emergency Communication in the Arctic

The Norwegian government has established HF radio communication connectivity in its Arctic waters as of 1 January.

HF connectivity in Arctic waters has been improved through establishing two new base stations, one in Svalbard and one in Hammerfest, on the mainland. These provide good connectivity. Having two base stations also reduces vulnerability.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Center as well as the coast radio stations will now be able to have two-way communications with those in need as well as with search and rescue resources in the area, which is imperative for rescue efforts. The coast radio stations will monitor the HF radio 24-7 year-round.
