New International Airport Opened in Nuuk

On Thursday, the first transatlantic flight landed at the new international airport in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

“Today is a joyful day. New routes are already in place and planned, among others to New York. We are excited and look forward to welcoming tourists to our beautiful country,” states the Greenlandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs on X (Twitter).

Direct flights via jet plane between Nuuk and Copenhagen, Denmark, are now available for the first time. A direct route between Nuuk and Keflavík, Iceland, has also been established. Previously, Kangerlussuaq Airport was the international hub for longer-distance jet traffic in Greenland.

In March 2025, one weekly departure will appear from Nuuk to Iqaluit, Canada – and in June, a flight route will be launched between Nuuk and Newark Airport in New York, USA.

Seasonal direct flights from Nuuk to the Danish cities of Aalborg and Billund will also be established next year.

By the end of 2026, two new airports will open in Illulissat and Qaqortoq in southern Greenland.
