New Film Tells How the USA Got Air Bases in Greenland
The film “Vores mand i Amerika” [Our man in America] tells the story of how the Danish diplomat Henrik Kauffmann signed an agreement with the USA regarding defense of Greenland and delivery of supply in a period when Denmark was cut off from doing so. In return, the USA was permitted to build military facilities in what was then a Danish colony, according to Sermitsiaq.
Director Christina Rosendahl is behind the movie, which is currently premiering in Denmark. There are also negotiations to show it in a.o. Greenland.
Henrik Kauffmann was a Danish diplomat in Washington D.C. prior to, during and after WW2. According to Rosendahl, Kauffmann was rather arrogant towards both the Danish government and the Greenlandic country governors, whom he out-maneuvered and argued were a burden.
Rosendahl says to the paper that Trump’s offer of buying Greenland in 2019 came as no surprise to her, as she sees a series of parallels between the geopolitical game back then and today.
