New Director of the Norwegian Polar Institute

On Friday, the King of Norway in Cabinet appointed Camilla Brekke as the new director of the Norwegian Polar Institute for a period of six years.

Brekke is currently vice-chancellor for research and development at UiT Norway's Arctic University, as well as a professor of computer science.

"The Norwegian Polar Institute is an institution that represents proud Norwegian traditions and which possesses high expertise within polar research and environment management. I am very excited to lead an institute with professional magnitude and highly skilled employees at a time affected by global climate change, changes in species and natural diversity, and strong geopolitical interests in the Arctic," says the soon-to-be director.

She will take office at a time set by the Ministry of Climate and the Environment and will be the institute's first female director.
