More Polar Bears in Western Greenland

The introduction of polar bear quotas have in recent years led to sightings of polar bears at Paamiut, Nuuk and Maniitsoq in Greenland, according to KNR.

“Prior to 2009, there were hardly any bears seen in this area, however, in later years there have been sightings more or less annually”, says Fernando Ugarte, Head of Division at Greenland’s Nature Institute.

Assessments show that the polar bears caught on the western coast are overall healthy and sound animals.

In 2006, quotas on polar bears were introduced, limiting the number of bears to be shot every year. This year’s quota is set at 156 polar bears.
