Mining company LKAB in Northern Sweden to build office in Kiruna's new city centre

The Swedish mining company LKAB, which operates iron ore mines in Northern Sweden, has signed an agreement with Peab for the construction of LKAB's office in Kiruna's new city center.

This will replace the current administration office, which is located adjacent to LKAB's industrial area, close to the iron ore mine.

Like Kiruna's old city center which has been moved 3 kilometers in a massive city transformation, the office has to be moved because of how mining affects the ground in the long run.

The contract is worth around SEK 450 million, the company writes in a press release.

The new office will have five floors with an area of 11,550 square meters. There will be workplaces for around 400 employees, parking garages and shelters.

"This is good for the development of Kiruna and the new city centre. The fact that there will be 400 people who will be working in the city centre can have a major positive impact on restaurants, retail, gyms and other activities for a lively city centre," says Magnus Backe, LKAB's area manager in Kiruna.

LKAB writes that the design of the new office is based on the mine, and steel will be used for railings and columns, among other things. The interior design is inspired by how it looks in underground production. Natural material choices should also create warmth in the interior.

Construction is scheduled to start in 2025 and occupancy in 2028.
