Illegal Musk Ox Hunt in Greenland
Greenlandic police is currently investigating the illegal hunt of some 30 musk oxen in three different areas on the Sigguk Peninsula in northwestern Greenland, according to KNR.
One may only hunt musk oxen if being awarded license for such hunt in Greenland, and each license holder may only take out one animal. The annual musk oxen quota totals 150 animals this year. The dead animals found in the area thus constitute 20 percent of the annual quota and have been illegally hunted. The animals have been left behind to decay, and no meat or other resources are extracted.
Early on in the investigation, the police warranted information from the public, a move that proved successful.
So far, the police has charged one person with illegal hunting. The person denies culpability.
