On Friday it was reported that Iceland was no longer listed as a candidate or potential candidate country on the website of the European Commission.
However, Iceland remains on the list of candidate countries on the EU website.When the government requested that Iceland no longer should be considered an applicant country, the announcement sparked protests in Iceland.
Iceland gave no reason for dropping the bid when the government announced the decision in March. But the two Eurosceptic parties that won the election in 2013 said the nation already enjoyed full membership benefits through deals with the European Union.
Iceland has free trade arrangements with the 28-member bloc, and is also part of the Schengen visa-free travel zone.
