Denmark Wants to Secure Greenland’s Airspace
Danish Defense Minister Trine Bramsen (S) says Denmark will strengthen its activities in Greenland’s airspace, according to Sermitsiaq. An assessment of what the need may bee is currently ongoing and the cost frame is up to DKK 1.5 billion, according to the paper.
Military analyst Hans Peter Michaelsen at the Center for Military Studies at the University of Copenhagen says to to the paper that surveillance is nearly non-existent today and that there is hardly any radar coverage of Greenland’s airspace.
Defense Minister Bramsen points out that it is not only radar systems that will be improved; new multi-purpose technologies will also be explored, for instance for use also in search and rescue operations.
