Danish Military Intelligence Report Warns About Russian Arctic Military Base
The expansion of a Russian military base on the Franz Joseph archipelago in the Arctic means that Russian fighter planes may constitute a direct threat to Greenland and the Thule Air Base, according to Danish Foreign Intelligence Services’ report, which was published recently, Altinget reports.
The Russian military base Nagurskoye on Alexandra Island in the Franz Joseph Land archipelago is currently so much developed that it should be considered an operative capacity from which Russia can operate fighter planes that can reach Greenland. This means that Denmark is facing a new situation in relation to the threat image in Arctic, according to the Danish Military Foreign Intelligence Report.
“In April 2020, Russia conducted an exercise in which the new runway of the QRA base Nagurskoye was used. The base thus has an operational capacity even though the scheduled expansion is not yet complete”, according to the report. “Danish maritime surveillance planes may now be met by Russian fighter planes in international air space around Greenland.”
