Barents Rescue Exercise in Kiruna, Sweeden

This week, a major international emergency exercise with participants from Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia – Barents Rescue 2019 – takes place in Kiruna, Sweden. The Barents Rescue exercise takes place every three year on a rotational basis.

Preparedness cooperation is one of the areas of cooperation within the frames of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council, which was initiated in 1993 following an initiative by the late Norwegian politician Thorvald Stoltenberg. The Barents Agreement from 2008 includes a.o. cross-border cooperation in emergency management.

The exercise includes a series of actors in preparedness and emergency response and practical case scenarios include landslide, derelict buildings as well as a bus accident.
