4.3 Kilometers of Subsea Cable Vanished Off North Norwegian Coast
4.3 kilometers of a subsea cable off the North Norwegian coast have vanished without a trace, according to Norwegian broadcaster NRK. The missing cable weighs around 10 tons and is not to be found anywere.
A subsea cable network called «LoVe Ocean» (LoVe from nearby Lofoten and Vesterålen archipelagos) is partially funded by Equinor and allows for real time collection of data from the seabed. The Norwegian Defense Research Establishment «filters» the data before researchers from the Norwegian Marine Research Institute get it due to the sensitivity of some of the data collected.
On 3 April this year, all screens suddenly went blank. Investigations with subsea ROV’s show that 4.3 kilometers of cable are simply gone and not to be found anywhere.
No explanation has been found so far as to the whereabouts of the missing cable, nor is there any information as to who is behind the vanishing act.
