HBO’s ‘True Detective 4’ Is First Recipient of Iceland’s New Incentive
On Sunday, January 14th, the fourth season of the anthology series True Detective premiered on HBO. The season depicts the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska and has been filmed in various locations in Iceland to double for Alaska. The season's tagline, 'Night Country', illustrates the setting: a rural Arctic town during the Polar Night.
The series is the first recipient of Iceland's new 35% filming incentive, writes Screen Daily. The new incentive, or rebate, was revealed in May 2022. All productions qualify for the 25%, but special criteria must be met for the 35% rebate including number of days shooting and local spending.
The show was shot in its entirety in Iceland, approximately 80% of the crew was Icelandic, and the project partnered with the Icelandic production company Truenorth.
